North Dakota doing something…

Did ANYONE see the story that was up briefly on Fox News about the North Dakota House giving fertilized eggs human status? I did, but it was up only very briefly and then disappeared. You can search for it and find it now, but it’s definitely not on the frontpage anymore. In fact, I can only find it there and in the North Dakota newspapers. Anyway…

I’m sure everyone’s going to be loopy on this one eventually. Hopefully the bill goes further than this. I’d like to hear some negative sides to the issue so as I can formulate some comebacks, but as of yet, I don’t see them…

OK, you hit my hot button. First, medicine should be practiced by physicians and not politicians. Second, a fertilized egg is NOT human YET; I’m not going to argue how many angels can dance on the head of a pin (i.e., when it DOES become human), but there are many fertilized eggs that do not make it to ‘human-ness’ and that has happened because God/Mother Nature/course of evolution/whatever deemed it not to happen this time. I would hate to see the possible extensions of this bill which would add much angst to the already emotionally charged atmosphere of miscarriages, stillbirths, etc. And don’t give that crap that no one would do that — SOMEONE who wanted to make a point WOULD do that!

    End of rant . . .

I agree with everything except the second point. I think it boils down to the fact that I would rather assume it’s a person first. Is it emotional when an embryo/fetus/child is lost due to anything? Yes, I know all too well about that. Personally, I think it would be “easier” to cope if it weren’t a person. At the same time, I don’t want to make that leap just for the sake of my comfort. Is there going to be someone that is going to try to make a point? Probably. I think it’s worth it, though.
